Sarah at 32

Well, here we are, 29th March 2021, and Sarah-Pie-Ragwort is about to turn over into a pumpkin aged 32 years.

It is important to stop, and celebrate. Although there are 7 billion people, most of them are not so significant in our lives. Well, nearly all of them are not so significant in our lives.

What's been going on (as Marvin Gaye said before his father shot him)?

Back in 1989 is was a rugby (Thursday) day, and after training at the Uni ground, in readiness for a match the following Saturday in which Uni would defeat Taroona 11-7, the other news of the day was presented by the Mother Ship "time to give birth".

A late evening trip to the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Argyle St, and set up in a hospital type room, with a couple of nurses circling, and for the next 4 hours it was heavy breathing. Then "Pop" out came the bit of jelly and blood, with slicked over dark hair, and everyone could breathe a sigh of relief.

"Five toes, on each foot!" That was the test.

The father had a little sleep on the hospital floor, then home to listen to "Beginning of a Great Adventure" by Lou Reed:

It might be fun to have a kid that I could kick around
A little me to fill up with my thoughts
A little me or he or she to fill up with my dreams
A way of saying life is not a loss

And so it began.

Image: It is noteworthy that of the dummy suckers, Sarah was the lesser. Camille had to be threatened with teeth extraction before she would stop.

She was a little older than in this picture, Camille, with the Mothership and the subject of this oration (Sarah):

So many memories, and all of a great character developing and developed. Unique in our family, uncritised (unlike every other person in our family, who, like diamonds, have their flaws), Sarah progressed through stages of baby, child, kid, youth, young adult, and now herself as finished product with jobs ahead.

Sometimes people wear their character on their sleeve. They show colour, clarity, and heart. Here, is an example. Comfortable feeding this large rat.

Early times encouraged enjoyment in the sun, the sand and water.

Destined to be a motorcyclist

And a fence sitter

But youth and childhood soon exploded into teenagership, and exploration of the boundaries of good conduct. Not much bad was done, and friends were made, nearly all of whom remain as the good friends of life.

Some tested the patience of Job, but that was high school. Then Hobart Matric College, and the pursuit of knowledge.

Mothers of invention surrounded Sarah.

But it was not all joy. There were times when seriousness had to intervene and confusion, uncertainty, and almost aggression were part of the daily routine: "Nappy on, nappy on" was the call -

Maturing into a happy adult and enjoying the company of sister and cousin

A willing participant in almost anything - a trip down the Franklin River in rubber rafts

The daily perambulation up to Mt Nelson for education

And a heart warming enthusiasm for travel and rugby: New Zealand, South Australia, Melbourne, Sydney, then France, England, Wales - even United States of America, but not to watch rugby there

Kakadu. More to explore there

Anything to avoid stacking the wood

An early enthusiasm to own a house

And a caring and loving relationship with the older members of the family

Bottoms up!

Braces on the teeth. Some sort of a modern day punishment

And the biggest and broadest smile ever capable of capture on film

Cuba and the Malecon - first day, hot as hell

The Caribbean

Not scared of revolution, ready to hop into Fidel's tank to protect the country from the Yanks

Dancing in Havana

Revolutionary square with Che Guevarra

Driving in the 1950s

A new friend in Lima

Rudeness to the Dad

Why in the boot? Dirty shoes, so they couldn't sit in the front of the car

Tenting on the East Coast

Someone is bored whilst Sarah is happy
Not really Sarah's philosophy. Hers is "There is a good time today"

Friends at Bruny

And the taste of muck in a bowl. No, sorry, I meant to say, the taste of new life, and the thought of doing the same herself one day

Very comfortable, especially with the variable speed can crusher close by

Emperor Justinian, knows how to light the fire

Friends across boundaries. Dogs, bats, Llama

And a very effective collaborator to keep Highfield looking good

Sarah is a bit of a rainbow herself

She joins in the fun of life. International Cuba and Cigar day

But divided allegiances: Uni - or the Penguins....

A great collaborator in managing the jobs at Highfield

Comfortable in the kitchen

7 Nixon - before the big reno. A very competent presentation to the Council committee overcame the disastrous approach of the so called heritage officer

Covid meant only Lulu was allowed up the stairs to 19 Sheldon Place

Battle of the wills and wits. Money at stake

Competent at the wheel

A friend to animals

She was a good child, and 'good - aftered' her little sister

And 'good-aftered' the pug to the extent that it had rolls of skinniness

Then became the sophisticated woman around town, capable in the boardrooms and courts of our land

Still conflicted by the Blue-Red divide

Happy on Amity -

And in Hong Kong for a 30th birthday

A regular visitor to the vet. Not for herself, but for the benefit of Stella Peugeot Artois, and the vet's pocket

Cheating at board games. So obvious it made Justin laugh, it made him cry

In the red light district with Jane and Rosie
And Camille
And moose

Happy birthday Pie.

Love from me on behalf of all your friends and family.
